ABRSM Initial Grade Piano FAQs.

The ABRSM Initial Grade Piano exam is a beginner-level exam that comes before Grade 1. It’s designed for piano students who have been learning for around 6–12 months and want a gentle introduction to music exams.

It’s suitable for children (usually from age 5), teenagers, and adult beginners, with no upper age limit.

No. The Initial Grade is completely optional.

Some students move straight to Grade 1, while others benefit from taking this extra step to help build their confidence. Your piano teacher can advise which is the best option for your child.

The exam lasts around 10–12 minutes and takes place at a local exam centre or school. The examiner is friendly and supportive, helping students feel at ease.

The exam has four sections and is marked out of 150.

Three short piano pieces are performed, chosen from the ABRSM Initial Grade syllabus.

  • The pieces are simple and beginner-friendly
  • They show basic musical skills such as steady rhythm and simple dynamics
  • The examiner is not expecting perfection

Marks available: 60

The scale section checks basic piano technique.

  • Very short scales (only a few notes)
  • Possibly a simple broken chord (arpeggio)
  • The focus is on relaxed hand position and control, not speed

Marks available: 21

Sight-reading means playing a short, unseen piece of music.

  • Your child is given time to look at the music first
  • The piece is very simple
  • Mistakes are expected, the goal is to keep going

Marks available: 21

Aural tests are listening activities, not written tests.

The examiner may ask your child to:

  • Clap or tap a rhythm
  • Say whether notes go up or down
  • Answer simple questions about a tune (fast/slow, loud/quiet)

Many children enjoy this section as it feels more like a game.

Marks available: 18

The exam is marked out of 150, with the following results:

  • 100 marks – Pass
  • 120 marks – Merit
  • 130 marks – Distinction

The emphasis is on progress and confidence, not technical perfection.

The Initial Grade is:

  • Shorter than Grade 1
  • Technically easier
  • Less demanding in reading and scales
  • Designed as a first exam experience

It helps students feel more prepared when they move on to Grade 1.

For beginners, 10–15 minutes of regular daily practice is usually enough.

Short, consistent practice is far more effective than long sessions and helps keep piano learning enjoyable.

You don’t need musical knowledge to support your child:

  • Encourage regular, relaxed practice
  • Keep feedback positive
  • Let the teacher guide exam preparation
  • Remind your child that the exam is simply a chance to show what they can already do

Yes. Many adult piano students choose the Initial Grade as a low-pressure first milestone, especially if they’re new to reading music or exams.
